Where to Go in Bosnia

Bosnia and Herzegovina is not a one stop country, but it is also not a country where you should try to see everything. These are the places most trips are built from, and the reasons to choose one over another.

Cities and towns

Sarajevo and Mostar anchor most itineraries. Banja Luka, Jajce and Trebinje are the places that make a route feel like a country rather than two stops.

National parks

Una in the northwest and Sutjeska in the southeast are both worth a night or two, but they sit at opposite ends of the country and rarely belong in the same short trip.

Regions

Herzegovina in the south is dry, warm and Mediterranean in feel. Central and northern Bosnia are green, mountainous and cooler. The difference shapes when you go.

Cities and towns

Copper workshops along a paved lane in Bascarsija, Sarajevo

City, Central Bosnia

Sarajevo

The capital, and the one place almost every Bosnia trip is built around. Compact centre, layered history, good food.

Stone bridge over the turquoise Neretva river in Mostar

City, Herzegovina

Mostar

Herzegovina's main draw. Busy by day in summer, much calmer in the evening once the day groups leave.

Waterfall below the old town of Jajce where the Pliva meets the Vrbas

Town, Central Bosnia

Jajce

A fortress town where the Pliva drops into the Vrbas. Small enough for an afternoon, good as a stop between north and centre.

National parks

If you are still deciding how these fit together, the Bosnia travel guide covers distances and trip length, and the itineraries show routes by number of days.
